As a producer one of the most frustrating things to overcome is beat block. When you can't come up with anything that feels inspiring and the music just won't come out, what do you do? I have a few suggestions that always help me even when I have a severe case of beat block.
1) Get new soundsĀ
This is probably the first thing you tried, but if you haven't maybe you should. New sounds usually equal new inspiration. You can always come to The Loop Source to get new sample kits, stems, and MIDI files that may be able to spark something.
2) Just make something
I know that sometimes I get beat block when I put too much pressure on myself to make the most fire beat. Those days I release myself from the pressure and just make something. All the beats you make don't have to sound amazing. It's ok to miss. That is part of the process. If you keep working at it and improving, there will come a time when you make less and less not-so-great beats.
3) Know what you want
Sometimes when I take some time and just focus on a vibe that I am trying to create and listen to that sounds over and over again, I get inspired. Take maybe about 30 minutes and listen only to the genre you are trying to create. Just focus on the music. Then listen to nothing and focus on that vibe. Think about the sounds you need to recreate that vibe. Sit in the vibe for another 30 minutes. Then try to recreate that sound and see if it's easier for you.
4) Take a break
We're all human. Just cool for a second and come back later. Maybe you've been going way too hard and you just need to recharge.
5) Try Another Genre
This one is huge. Maybe you can't create that vibe you want because deep down that's just not how you feel at the moment. Try creating something completely different and out of the box. See what happens then. I know I few times I have been trying to create dark trap beats, but deep down I wanted to make more soulful music.
Bonus Tip
Tutorials are great inspirations. Try going on YouTube and finding a beat-making tutorial and making your version of their beat. This could be helpful because it takes the thought out of the music creation process. You don't have to think about sound selection because someone else already did.
These are the strategies I use to cure beat block and hopefully, they can help you too. I just want to encourage you to keep going and keep striving for your goals and nothing will stand in your way (not even beat block).
